I'm starting a new series on my blog! In 2025 I aim to visit and "review" all 31 libraries in the Monroe County Library System (MCLS). Spoiler alert: They're all 10/10 stars! I've already been to about half of them, but want to learn more about what each has to offer - and share it with you!
First up is the Webster Public Library. The library has been in its current location since 2002, though there was a major renovation in 2016, which moved the entrance and added an additional 4,000 square feet to the interior.
To me, one of the very best things about this library is the inventive and beautiful artwork that the staff creates! A few recent examples include the beehive windows, ants and ant-farm made of Easter eggs, butterflies and umbrellas (with twinkling lights like fireflies) hanging from the ceiling, and more:
And do you know what height you are in fictional characters? I'm about Peter Pan tall (as seen in the children's section).

Speaking of the children's section, they have beautiful murals and other fun decorations there, as well as in the teen section (i.e., The Dragon's Den):
In addition to all that, and besides their many, many shelves of books, they also have:
Puzzles: An extensive puzzle collection, which I've utilized many times. No need to check them out - it's a take one / leave one situation.
Seeds: A seed library - in an old card catalog!
Bookstore & Merch: A nice little bookstore, and merch for sale - e.g., "Where Books Are Worth Reading" shirts and sweatshirts.
Cafe: Cafe seating with self-serve coffee and vending machines.
Community rooms: Reservable event rooms, private study rooms, and quiet reading areas.
Computers: A whole bank of computers you can sign onto and use for free, including a dedicated genealogy computer, with access to multiple resources, like the Library Edition of Ancestry.com.
Events: Lots of events like storytime, sit-and-stitch, tech assistance, and informational talks, as well as tutoring, exam proctoring, etc.
VIP and Empire Passes: Discounts to museums, and free admission/parking for NYS parks
If you visit soon (I'm writing this in June 2025), you can even have a say in what they name their new raccoon mascot:
And if you're heading out that way, bring a few non-perishables to donate to the Free Food Pantry outside the main door. The library also accepts donations for Hope House, the Webster Community Chest, and Bella's Bumbas.
